The earliest description of Unicorn is from Ctesias who described them as wild asses, fleet of foot, having a horn a cubit and a half in length and colored white, red and black. Aristotle must be following Ctesias when he mentions two one-horned animals.

很久以前 的獨角獸出現在希伯來人的《聖經·舊約》中，這種額頭長有一隻角的馬叫做Re'em，最初被譯作Monokeros，後來才演變成英文中的Unicorn。 

公元前398年，古希臘歷史學家克特西亞斯在他的書中寫道：「獨角獸生活在印度、南亞次大陸，是一種野驢，身材與馬差不多大小，甚至更大。他們的身體雪白，頭部呈深紅色，有一雙深藍的眼睛，前額正中長出一隻角，約半米長。」這隻神秘的角從此流傳了幾個世紀。
